Real men hold hot coffee in paper cups between their legs with no wimpy cup holders!
However, our '93 has the 2 cup slide out forward thing on the padded armrest which attaches in same way as standard armrests, and it's very stable. Our '92 has the slide out 2 front/2 rear referenced below, and the overall armrest hinges from the center console and is not so stable (it's out of the car at the moment for epoxy fix where screws attach). OEM Volvo accessory, and not a great design. I would try to find the more solid 2 cup holder. Also, while I've never taken one apart, might be able to find a beat standard padded armrest and cut out holes for 2 cups. Could even have plugs for holes when not in use if wanted to. Along the same lines, though less destructive, buy some minicell foam (google it) and shape a block with cup holes to fit toward rear of handbrake. Spray with "Tooldip" to stabilize.
