Failed ECU or AMM 200 1989

Volvo 244DL, 1989 will not start and continue running. Engine cranks and I get a few sputters but it will not idle. So far I have changed out the main pump and filter and have elimanated the fuel relay as the cause. I have the in-tank pump on order and will install upon receipt. I also bypassed the fuel relay to run the fuel pump and the car still would not start and run. So let start at the beginning --the car quit in traffic, check engine light came on, since then it will not start and run. One puzzling thing, I have a constance red light at port #2 on the OBD unit and I can not read out any diagnostic codes. I am think the ECU, a 561, has failed (after 293k). Has anyone experienced a simlar problem or have any ideas?? The constance red light and no codes is a pain. Thanks for any help.
