I have found that the biggest problem with installing DIN cup holders in our cars is clearing the center stake to allow for cup larger than a 12oz can, while at the same time, not interfering with the shifter, especially in automatics.
There have been successful installations by some people on BB (http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1278577/220/240/260/280/possibility_cup_holders.html) but you will see how close they come to the shifter.
I have been rolling around the idea of the little flip-open cup holders that I see on eBay. They can be mounted with screws, and they are about the size of the small 4-inch speakers upfront. The door panel might have to be reinforced, and this will only work if you have installed additional speakers down low in the door (unless you don't mind not having music, which in Tampa traffic, is the only way I don't lose my mind). There is definitely enough room for cans and bottles, and larger drive-thru cups might fit as well. Only other catch would be that they would block the vents.
Anther option I have found as far as DIN cup holders go are a style from a 00 - 01 VW Passat.
They look a little shoddy, and would require some fabrication for the install, but mounted low like they are in the picture, heavier beverages might be supported by the transmission tunnel, and they would clear the shifter as well. They are little pricey though, and the budget doesn't allow for such research nowadays.
