New Water Pump leaks like a sieve 200 1986

What did I do wrong? Put the pump on, connected it all up, and it's leaking worse than before, most noticably near the upper O-ring. did I just not tighten the studs enough, or what? Any tips/tricks?

I'm getting ready to take it to the mechanic to clean up my friggin mess.

I bought the pump from NAPA, and had one heck of a time mating it to the engine.

This is an 86 B230 245.
