1990 760: fuel guage inoperative 700

I bought this 760 a couple of months ago, and the fuel gauge didn't work when I bought it. The PO, who is a friend of mine, told me that the gauge worked "sometimes" and that the needle would suddenly spring up to read normally. In the two months I've owned it, I haven't seen this happen once.

I'd like to know if there is any other potential source of this problem besides the sending unit. According to my local discount Volvo parts supplier, a new sending unit is about $500. Is it possible to R&R these, I wonder? I suppose the gauge in the dash could be bad, but I kinda doubt this. Dunno how to get into the instrument cluster anyway.

Thoughts?

Best,

Michael
