Starter /Solenoid Repair /Replace ??? 200 1987

1986 240 sedan auto. Drove to store.When leaving would not turn over. Battery is fine. Think problem may be starter/solenoid. When I took a wire from red/+ battery post to starter smaller wire/lowest terminal the starter motor worked. However engine did not turn over. Shouldn't engine have cranked /turned ? Why when key was turned nothing happened ? I do not hear a click from starter solenoid. Do I need to replace both starter & solenoid ? Or is problem(s) elsewhere ? How involved/difficult is it to replace starter/solenoid ? Thanks for advice/help with this matter.
