... it's not the latest OE configuration.

The squished area adds a bit of clearance where the pipe goes UNDER the axle. It's been like this since the mid/late '70s. However, I've heard (here) that Volvo has recently reverted to the older OVER axle pipe style, as used in '76-'77 as I recall.

Maybe that latest (old) shape is what Erling is referring to?
