Valve clatter when warm 200 1983

'83 244GL B23f L.H. 2.0

Valve clatter happens not when the car is under a load, but when I'm just crusing right around 1800-2000 rpm. It also seems worse on a warm day (>80) and not so much or at all when its cooler. It's the same kinda clatter sound you would hear upon hard acceleration using low octane fuel. My guess is loose valves, but I don't have the tools or shims. If only it were an aircooled VW...

good AMM, 87 octane fuel, no other symptoms. My car performs wonderfully otherwise, save for the lack of power steering (leaky rack)
