tensioning A/C belt -- Bentley P215-3, Fig6. 200 1984

Your '84 has the B23 engine. The AC belt tension adjustment is done by varying the width of the crank pulley "V". Shims between the two halves are swapped in or out to alter how low or high the belt rides in the V-groove ("sheave").

I don't see a good description in Bentley, but check page 215-3, Fig.6 (and text above) for a start.

EDIT: I don't believe the AC compressor had a belt tension adjustment until the B230, which started in 1985.
