cooling system not releasing pressure 700

A 1990 740 automatic, with a new thermostat will not release pressure after driving to running temperature and then parking the car and cooling down. It's not overheating. There is still pressure in the system. Opening the coolant overflow tank will release the pressure. Using a gray 150 k cap on the tank.
Is the thermostat vent hole wrong side down? Would a black cap help? Do I need to flush the system or what? Thanks
