New springs 200 1993

This past week I completed the conversion of my car to all polyurethane bushings. In addition, I also put springs from a 245 on the back, and Scantech's HD springs on the front. I've been wanting stiffer springs for a while, but as tall as I am and as bad as my knees already are at 25, I did NOT want to lower my car.

In both cases I calculated the change in spring rate to be around 25%. Both ends of my car raised a little, maybe an inch in the front and an inch and a half in the rear. How does it feel? Amazing!

This was, in my opinion, a far better upgrade than the IPD sways. Of course, those are nice, but even after installing them with my old springs I felt something was missing; this is what was missing.

I've noticed little or no increase in harshness or noise, but a MAJOR increase in road holding. For instance, a particular off-ramp near the house has a long sweeping curve that I normally try to take at 40mph or so. At 40mph I used to get a bit of squeal from my tires trying to break loose, so I had to back down. Yesterday I took the ramp at the same speed and noticed no squeal whatsoever, even when I pushed it a little faster.

Even after the IPD sways, Sachs gas shocks, and poly front end bushings I felt the car was still kinda sloppy. These springs, with only a modest increase in stiffness, have finally given me the control I was seeking. The only other plans I have for suspension now are chassis braces and I think I will have found MY perfect ride: a fine balance between stiff and smooth, with plenty of control on sticky asphalt, but with the ability to ride on rough, unpaved roads if necessary.
