What is this? (on '88 740 GLE 230 engine) 700

I'd like to know what this is.
I'm guessing it's a vent of some sort OR a return line.
It's in the 10 O'clock position from the "230" stamp on the passenger side of the block, under the bend of the oil dip stick tube, right above the oil pan.

Anyone 100% on what it is? Please let me know.

under the left side of engine, looking up.
