Stymied by shifter shaft plug 200 1979

"Solid plastic plug" is throwing me. The only thing remotely resembling a plug is grommet at the bottom of the chromed sleeve that covers the actual shifter and it's supposed to be there.

I switched the M45 in my '80 for an M46 a few years back. The "new" shifter is distinctly different and has an opening in the sleeve for the OD wiring. The opening is above the so-called "plug."

I see no reason you can't use the one you have if you create a similar opening. Make it a slot as opposed to just drilling a hole so the wiring doesn't bend abruptly. I would worry a little about the wires chafing on the rough edge though so you might want to make some provision to keep that from happening.

Since the newer type knob with the push button is readily available I would go with that and, of course, the relay. I, or someone else here, can advise you of how to wire it.

Don't presume that the overdive unit is in good working order. You may also be in for some repairs there.
