Fuel filters - How good are they? 200 1978

This is a side question to my real problem - fuel delivery issues. It's possible (likely?) that my fuel injectors have been contaminated by sediment or particles from the fuel tank and/or degraded fuel lines. Before I simply throw new injectors at the problem, do I need to resolve any fuel tank issues or will the new fuel filter catch the contaminants? If the fuel injectors solve the problem I would replace the rubber gas lines and deal with the tank in some way, shape, or form but I would like to make sure the car runs okay before I dump a lot of time/money into it. Thx!
