740 turbo running 700

Hi all,

I have a 1987 740 turbo with 100,300mi. The other day while driving the car began to loose power and run into the knock sensor, it also began idling quite rough. The spark plugs were covered with a white ash which indicated a lean condition. I replaced the fuel filter and that didn't help the problem. While the car is running I can hear both in tank and under car fuel pumps running. I'll be checking for vacuum leaks today and the fuel pressure regulator. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to the cause of the problem?
