Hey all,
It's that time of year again, 110+ degree weather and it looks like my MAF is giving me problems again. 2 or 3 years ago my MAF failed and I replaced it with a good used one. It worked okay, but last year at this time the car quit when it was 110+ out. Spluttering, chugging, no power, can't rev past a few hundred RPM, etc.
Wait a while for it too cool off a bit, the car would start and run okay for a short while then resume the above symptoms. Came back about a half an hour later and it started right up and ran fine. Well, exactly a year later it happened again. This time I removed the MAF and placed it in front of an AC of a working vehicle and reinstalled it and pored some water over it to help cool it off. Started up and ran for about a mile or two then symptoms resumed.
Engine emitted intense heat, but never overheated. Stayed in the normal operating range the whole time.
MAF was very hot to the touch.
Here's a strange, from what I've read you're supposed to be able to unplug the MAF and the car's supposed to go in limp home mode, but this car has never been able to run without it, it splutters a little while cranking, but it will not start at all. Any ideas why this is?
Are there any conductivity or resistance tests that can be done on the MAF or the vehicles wiring to check operation?
I've read about the temp sensor in the air box and how it can go bad. It looks like mine's still good, but I think I'll bypass it for the cold air only mode just in case.
Any feedback is appreciated, TIA!
