What eyyu said, and there is NO WAY on this earth you should pay $8k for a 13 year old 850, I don't care how many miles it has or how clean it is. $4500 to 5k tops. I try to keep a pretty good eye on Craigslist for Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio and I see a lot of 850's and 240's and far lower prices.
If you go 240 and you have no urge to fix stuff or to learn (a lot) then don't bother either. That $4000 car might be in great shape but its still 20 years old. There will be quirks, noises, and irregularities and if you have been driving a newer car recently, it is very hard to go "back" to an older vehicle. Also, any shop work bordering on a few hours is going to cost you a couple hundred every time. If you did repair yourself (except for major engine or transmission work), then it's worth it to buy the 240 and not have big car payments. You'll just be buying parts new or from scrapyards just like the rest of us.
Finally, don't get totally swept away with the recent surge in popularity of the 240's and the inflated prices. If you're patient, you'll find a good 240 at a far more reasonable price, and this all depends on how much you have in your pocketbook and what value means to you.
You said in another post you won't be fixing anything yourself, and if you're used to newer cars, I would recommend an 850. But be patient there too. There are a LOT of these available.
