How do I remove the alt. brushes? 700 1986

You don't heat the brush or try to remove the braid from the brush.
The new brushes come with new copper braid that needs to be soldered.
into the holder as Randy described. There is a captive spring in back of the brush. I held it together with a small hemostat (Clamp)to hold it in position
for soldering.

You can get a new brushs/regulators cheap from S&J Rebuilders
(The specialize in starters and alternators)
