Nonworking OD and door rust issues 200

First of all, thanks to all for helping with my M45 shifter, M46 transmission problem. I finally got all the parts to my shop and they put it all together. Solenoid works, no relay because I have the pre-1980 shifter with the slide switch, but the OD doesn't work. My mechanic thinks it might be the seals on the actuator pistons, but at this point, I'm still recovering from the cost of initial post purchase repairs (I'm not as handy as most on the board, so I'm paying for the labor). Can I drive the car without the OD working? Would it be better for the OD to be overhauled, or another OD to be put on?

Also, I have discovered that what I thought was an inconsequential rust spot on the end of the driver's door at the level of the base of the window frame is, in fact, somewhat structural. With the window down (summer, no A/C), it's clear from opening and closing the door that the window frame is close to separation at that site. Can I have somebody reweld that spot, or is a door replacement in order? I have a 242 so the doors are less common. Also, there is an old dent in the lower back corner of the passenger door that is starting to rust in the creases. Is this repairable or again, am I looking at another door replacement?

My shop's good, but at this point, I'm wishing that I was more mechanically skilled and lived on the West Coast so the cost of repair (labor and parts) wouldn't be so painful.
