1991 740 stalled/died in traffic 700

Hi all,

My 1991 740 (165K miles) stalled the other day and would not restart. When it stalled, we were in traffic going about 15 mph. The gas tank was about 3/4 full, if not slightly more. It was very hot - about 95 degrees - and we had been driving on the highway for about 2 hours. The car was not overheated. There was no warning, it just happened all of a sudden.

The engine won't turn over. When I turn the key, it makes a fuel-starved choking kind of noise, not a clicking battery-dead type of noise. All the electric things in the car work - the fans, the lights, etc. - although it doesn't sound like the in-tank pump is on. I ran the OBD and the error codes came up as "miscellaneous driving problems" and fuel-related things.

I am inclined to think this is a fuel pump, ignition, or relay type of problem, or a fuse problem, but I am definitely not an expert.

Because of my job, I had to leave my car hundreds of miles away in the middle of nowhere, with a mechanic who said he doesn't know anything about Volvos. I'm expecting a phone call shortly to explain that he has no idea what's wrong. Therefore, I'm trying to make a list of things I could suggest he check out.

I have to apologize for my general lack of car knowledge.

Thank you!
