Brake light problem 700 1989

My passenger side brake light began to intermittently not work back during the winter. It has progressively gotten worse so now it never works. I've changed the bulb (after breaking it trying to get it out) and the bulb carrier and I still have the problem, so I'm thinking it's a short somewhere. I also have a intermittent problem with the bulb failure light blinking with my driver's side turn signal even though all the lights function normally. Could these two be related to a common problem, and where do the taillight ground wires eventually connect with the body so I can begin looking there?
