rear axle/m47 onto an 86? 200

I have a leaking rear gear box at the bearing and seal. From what I've read its best to replace the whole rear axle. I know of an 89 with a good M47 on it. Is it possible to swap everything from the rear seal of the engine back. I have a M46 on it at the moment but wouldn't mind haveing time with it off a car for some r and r on the OD before maybe putting it on my 83 where the gears aren't feeling as smooth and the OD is no go so far. This sounds like a huge project and can't say it would happen anytime real soon but its always good to check the options out. Thanks.
