bearings and tierods 200

I have a great 1990 Volvo 240 with no rust and 170,000. I just finished my first decade and going for my second. I've moved to an area where the nearest Volvo mechanic is 90 miles away. My good 'non-volvo' mechanic says I need new 'tie-rods' and need to 're-pack' the bearings.
When you replace tierods on a 240 wagon are there certain things I must know or do at the same time? What about the repacking the bearings?
