740 cluster swap - maybe do just inards? 700 1992

Hey guys,
So I read like a million posts last night on the hazards of switching instrument clusters on these cars, so for 92 turbo I need to stick to either a 91 or 92 turbo for the cluster to work and and lights and gauges to work and the speedo to be accurate - is that correct? My old cluster has the bad speedo where it jumps around and sometimes does no register consistent with the bad 220 uFarrod cap issue I've read alot about. I'm wondering if I find an earlier cluster if I could just remove that cap or other parts of the speedo and put it in my current cluster. Anybody have an experience with "Frankenclustering" like this?
Thanks
RMc
