I had the same symptoms when I installed my new head unit and speakers. My mistake was not wiring up the remote/power antenna wire. (It's blue, I think). I figured that I didn't have a remote/power antenna, who needs it? Well after digging back into the wire bundle and hooking it up, I now get killer reception on both AM and FM. I figure the blue(?) wire is powering some sort of amp or electronic antenna. Good luck
