Late PV interior handle removal difficulty 444-544

Hi all; I have a 1965 PV544. Yesterday I rolled down the driver's window, heard the window fall off the mechanism and now it won't roll up. To get the interior door panel off, I have to take off the window winder and door opener handles, but I can't get them off. I have consulted the factory workshop manual, and it says I need to use a special tool to lever them off. The special tool looks like it could be easily replicated with a pair of flat-head screwdrivers but with these they still won't budge. I see the photos in the manual show handles that look like an older design; mine look slightly more modern with a flatter appearance. Does this make any difference? Does anyone have any suggestions, apart from duct tape and a piece of transparent plastic over the window aperture??? Thanks; Tim
