I thought .005 - .015 was about right, with most right at .014 - .015, until I came across some theoretically stock engines that measured out at around .030.
Before that we just routinely took .007 off the block during rebuilds and used the .028 gasket which is no longer available. So you really have to measure it, to be sure. Shoot for a squish area distance of around .035 plus or minus a few thou.
