Need advice regarding S90 S90-V90

I want my sons first car to be ...perhaps an S90.I cannot fathom the thought of a new or used Japanese compact when in my opinion a safer alternative such as these volvos exist. I have 91 740 but he doesnt like it Are there any GREAT concerns regarding the S90 so much so that it would not be recommended? I am not limited to this ,however I do like the RWD .I am staying away from the newer(ford) models S60 S80 etc..Thanks for your opinions in advance.
