front muffler

I just purchased a nice '90 240 sedan with 122,000 original miles. It has a fairly new exhaust system, but the front muffler is defective even though it appears to be a new "walker" brand. The exit pipe has broken free from the outer rear shell and leaks. Its a clean break 360 degrees around the exit pipe (like it was never welded) but it will not pull out of the shell (maybe has a flange inside the muffler). If I can't weld the pipe, can I just replace the muffler with a piece of pipe? Will the rear muffler alone be quiet enough?
