Swap 85 wiring harness into 84 240? Any pitfalls? 200 1984

A few weeks ago I posted with problems about my 84 240. When starting and driving slowly in first gear the car would die momentarily and then pick up again and run without trouble until the next time I turned it off and restarted at which point the same sumptom would occur. Also, the timing never advanced past 30 degrees at full throttle (S/B 52 degrees) and the car pinged under any condition driving or not whenever the throttle was opened. I replaced AMM, checked fuel pressure at the rail, repalced main fuel pump, checked flow from tank pump, replaced both fuel and ignition control units, TPS, coolant sensor, knock sensor, air control valve, distributor. Checked for vacuum leaks and found none. Checked continuity from distributor to ign control unit. Gave up and took it to a shop which spent 6 hours trying to diagnose with no success. Their conclusion: it's running lean. That'll be $200 even though we couldn't find the problem.

So the plot thickens. I get it home. I pull the fuel injection computer out of this car and put it back in the good running car (also an 84 240 and yes the ICU aprt numbers are the same) from which I borrowed it and lo and behold the good running car no longer runs properly. The idle races around 3000 so I figure that the car with all of the problems fried the borrowed computer. What is also weird is that when I put the computer back in the bad running car it idles perfectly but pings mercilessly whenever I give it gas. So my conclusion at this point is that I have a bad wiring harness that has somehow fried the fuel injection computer. Does this sound plausible to anyone?

Considering that there are virtually no other parts to replace since I used the shotgun approach, the wiring harness is the only thing left.

Assuming this is true, I have a very nice wiring harness from an 85 240 that I would like to swap into my 84 240. 84 was the cut off year and many things changed afterward. They have different ICU's (both fuel and ignition) but I have both of those from the 85. The 85 uses a single fuel pump relay whereas the 84 has a main system relay and a pump relay. I also have the relay from teh 85. Everything else seems the same. Other than those differences, is this doable? Am I missing something else? Has anyone ever done this? Obviously, I'd really rather not spend $100 or so on a used harness when I have one from the 85 and all of the ancillary components that I know to be good.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
