Oil leak getting better ???? 900 1995

95-940 169K. Over the couple month's I've had this car, I've had to keep a small pan under the rear main area to catch the dripping oil. Drips enough to make a mess. Cam seal also apparently leaks due to oil all over the water pump. Oil fill cap also fails the jiggle test.

Have done a lot of archive reading relating to the PCV system & preparing to drop the trans for rear main replacement. The tube from the vapor box to the flame trap was split (replaced), found the brass nipple that provides vacuum to the smaller flame trap hose was clogged (cleaned). Throttle body needed cleaned badly. Vapor box is clear & the o-ring between the box & block replaced.

Over the weekend I did some modification to the PCV system after breaking the plastic nipple off the flame trap housing (JB weld didn't work this time). None of the local parts houses know what a flame trap is or show any listing for the part. The box of various hoses that has accumulated over the years, has finally come in handy. Had a thick idle control hose from a past BMW that was a near perfect fit from the vapor box to the air intake tube. Grafted in a larger hose to replace the smaller hose that was at the flame trap. Pulls more air/vacuum at idle than the smaller one did. The flame trap is now gone after installing the one piece hose from the BMW.

I know that that some will cringe at the thought of bypassing the flame trap, but it was common practice to remove them from the 960 & I never had a problem from the 2 I did it to. Never had a backfire in any of the other red blocks I've owned either.

Now for the good part, the top of the water pump is now free of any leaking oil, not a drop. The rear main appears to have slowed considerably as well. Hopefully it is now just leaking any residual oil from the area. Going to stop using the catch pan & monitor with a piece of cardboard. The oil fill cap now has difinite vacuum instead of dancing when released. Going to get a spare cap so I can rig it up to measure vacuum. Crankcase pressure(lack of vacuum) is what makes these engines leakers aside from normal worn seals.

I feel that replacing the smaller flame trap hose with one of larger diameter is helping out the most. Am I right in thinking that of the 2 hoses coming off the flame trap, the larger one pulls vacuum with the throttle plate open, due to its placement in front of the throttle body? And the smaller hose pulls vacuum at idle when the butterfly is closed and gets its vacuum from the intake manifold?

All I know is, that I already see a reduction in the amount of oil leaking, and if this engine dries up, I'll be extremely happy. Won't have to replace the rear main seal and can change over to synthetic oil. I'm very satisfied with this car so far, it has been taken care and has many miles left in her. I did get spoiled having owned 2 960's already, & would trade for another 960/V90. It would have to be in at least equal condition. To me this 95 represents the pinacle of red block evolution. I miss the performance that the white block offers. But the simplicity of the 940 carries with it, a lot of appeal.
