Was thinking about my old 84 242t again. Was taken out when rear-ended, but it saved us from injury. Anyway, I've always been a fan of the Volvo coupe. And the 780 is Volvo's finest design. Which brings me to the coupe I now own & would consider a trade- Coupe for Coupe.
It is an 86 635CSi BMW. I consider this to be BMW's finest design. It would be BMW's close equivalent to the 780. 2 door coupe, 3.5 straight 6 (big 6), 5-speed, factory sports seats, rear buckets (4 passenger), 3:25 limited slip, & loaded with just about every feature BMW could throw at it. It was their flagship model & sold for 45K in 1986. Like the 780, its purpose is a grand touring coupe. Built for continental travel, eating up the miles effortlessly, quickly & comfortably.
I been driving bimmers slightly longer than I've been driving bricks (13 yrs). As a matter of fact, the funky, boxy Volvo took on a new appeal after a serious accident in my 1st e30 bimmer. Been through 240's, 960's, & what's currently in my sig.
I'm not looking for a garage queen, but I'm not ready to take on serious project. Needs to be rust free (as much as possible), 4 cylinder (no PRV), no crumbling engine harness and fairly sorted out. This 635 is ready to roll and completed a 1,200 mile trip in april to participate in the annual gathering dedicated to the 6, SESF (South East Shark Fest). I've owned this car for 3&1/2 yrs & have been completely through this car, everything works as it should except for the AC. Compressor still kicks on, but does not cool, so the system is still sealed.
The 6 is not as rare as the 780, 6 specific parts are still plentiful. The e24 6 series is built off the e28 5 series platform/suspension & drive train. Interior & exterior are all 6. Built for 13 yrs ('76-'89), there were right at 80K produced. Still it is a car not seen everyday & being an 86, still gets compliments.
If there is an interest I can go deeper into details. White with black interior, 219K (just like a maintained Red block, has plenty of miles left), no smoke, plenty of power, loves the open hwy, but can handle the twisties. 26-27 cruising smiles per gallon if you keep your foot out of it.
I still love this car, but after checking out a few 780 pics, it got me thinking again.
Thanks for reading, Dave
