Hi,
I recently purchased a 1980 245 for $500 bucks... The car is in great condition but it sat for the past 11 years. I pulled the gas tank, and cleaned it out with the Eastwood kit. It really did a nice job. I also replaced the in-tank pump, the sending unit, the main external pump, and the accumulator. The car was running but surging really bad under any kind of load. So just kinda poking around in the fuse box with the car running I pulled the fuse for the intank pump. The engine smoothed out, and the main fuel pump quieted down. I took her for a spin, and it runs great. So here's what I think is wrong.
When I installed the in-tank pump I kinda felt that the wiring was backwards on the pump. It would only install one way due to the way the connectors are made, but it seemed kinda weird that the pump's + terminal would get connected to the frame of the sender. I even connected the sender to the car before installing it in the tank, and triggered the pump relay to hear it make a sound. So I thought all was well.
I believe that the fuel pumps are fighting each other, since disconnecting the intank pump solved all problems, and it sounds like the main pump is not working as hard now. I ordered all of the replacement parts from FCPGroton, and I'm really thinking that the connector plug from the sender to the pump was put together wrong. Any suggestions other than taking the sender back out and switching the wires?
Also... sorry for the long post.
Thanks,
Erik
