Odd behavior in AW70 overdrive

1990 244 175K

My son was on vacation and called to say his car would not go into OD. He ended up driving home without OD for about 350 miles.

Got the car home and determined the solenoid was toast. I had a good used on on the shelf and installed it today.

With the working replacement solenoid in place the car will still not shift into overdrive. What it seems to be doing rather than shifting is to "freewheel"

It stays in 3rd gear but when you let up off of the throttle it coasts and the engine does not slow it down as it normally would in 3rd gear.

If when you are freewheeling you press the switch to disengage OD it will give the sensation of downshifting as you would expect if it actually were in OD.

I was very careful about debris around the solenoid when removing/replacing and the fluid level is correct.

Ideas?

Randy
