740 AW71 replacement for 240 AW70?

If I should need to swap out the transmission in my son's 90 244 I am wondering what differences there are with the AW71 in an 87 744Ti parts car I have available?

Are they physically the same size and would the only difference be in the shift linkage?

Would he notice any difference in drivability?

I also have a low mileage AW out of a B234f... is that a possible replacement?
