oilp pump shot??? 900 1993

hi all! my '93 960 wagon has decided to take a vacation by refusin not to run. it all started by shredding a piece of the timing belt, not breaking it, just shredding a small section off. no noise, or racket, just a huge oil spill from somewhere around the oil pump! i got a new belt, and installed it hoping to figure out where this leak is coming from. after several tries to revive her, the oil once again came streaming out. my guess is the pump has gone south. has anyone else seen or heard of this happening, and is there a sensor on/around the oil pump that will prevent this engine from running due to lack of low/no oil pressure? i figure a good starting point will be to pull the pump and check the gear set, as it is probably shot, but what would cause this thing to all of a sudden rip the timing belt to shreds other than the oil pump gears seizing up?
any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated! thx, louis
