M46 shift knob/OD button install question 200 1986

The car is actually a 740 Turbo but I'm posting it here since there's more 240s out there with the 81-86 M46 with pushbutton OD. When replacing the shift knob I see a white plastic collar that holds the female spade connections for the OD button. It looks like that collar is supposed to sit down in the knob, it's too wide to fit up through the bottom. The spade terminals are too wide to slide out of the collar though to allow the collar to slide down from the top of the knob. Is there a trick to install this or do I have to cut the spade terminals off, slide the wires up through the bottom of the knob, slide the collar down into the knob, then solder the spade terminals back on? There must be an easier way!! Anyone have suggestions? Thanks
