M46 shift knob/OD button install question 700 1988

I'll give it a shot. Been several yrs since I reglued mine. If memory serves. Thought a side slot cut into the actual shifter allowed the wires to be pull up through. I recall having to pull some slack up so I could reattach the wires, then slowly pull the slack out while slipping the knob back on.
