Open slots around distributor 900

On dist. caps mounted at the rear of the head are those slots. They just seem open to the elements, dirt & moisture. Does anyone else find it strange that the cap is not sealed? If you look in at the right angle you can see the sparking as the rotor turns.

Has anyone sealed these open areas, or an I missing a cover of sort? I've removed the black plastic cover that goes on the outside of the cap. Have read that water can get trapped between the cap & the black cover like when opening the hood if it's wet. Water can drain almost directly on top of the cap.

Just wondering.
