Stereo wattage? 700 1987

Hi folks,

I'm waiting on a set of Kenwood keys to rewire my radio, and wondered a few things that I hope you guys have the answers to.

My Kenwood has the mark '35Wx4,' so I assume a total of 140 watts divided between 4 speakers. Does this sound right?

I have had a problem with distortion when playing my stereo near its peak wattage, and I wondered if it's the amp (internal to the Kenwood unit; the stock amp is bypassed) or the speakers. What wattage was the sound system designed for?

Thanks!

Ari
