First Oil Change Done..My Back Hurts... 900

Ok, so I decided to change my own oil today, instead of paying the independent 55.00. I used a Volvo filter, 11.00 at Roger Beasley Volvo, and 1 gallon of 10-30 Valvoline Premium Conventional oil, plus 3 indiv. quarts. Ended up with 3/4 of a quart left over. I haven't done my own oil change in a long time...I also used a new copper sealing washer on the drain plug, .98 cents at Volvo. Next time i will change the plug, since I noticed someone had begun to round it off. BTW, what's that huge nut at the bottom of the oil filter housing? If it holds dirty oil, should that be drained as well? I didn't prime the filter, though, I just idled it till the idiot light went out. The rest of the underside is bone dry, so that is good. Anything I missed? any suggestions? I actually waited til I hit 5000 miles before i changed it. Cheers! Dave in Austin
