Speedometer not always up to speed 140-160

Hi everyone,
I have a '72 142 and lately the speedometer does not always read correctly. It will either stick at around 40-45 when I know I'm going faster or not return when I start to slow. A good smack or two on the top of the dash "wakes" it up, but my hand is starting to hurt. ...actually it has only been a few days now. Can I lube the speedometer with graphite or another type of lube if I pull the cluster out or is it time to look for another instrument cluster.
Thank you,
CU
