M46 shift knob/OD button install question 700 1988

Yes there's a slot on the side of the selector rod. The issue though is that the wires pass through an off-white plastic collar that seems like it's supposed to fit through the top of the knob. The knob can't be put back on in the proper order (collar pressed down through top of knob, wires passed up through bottom of knob and collar, install knob and attach wire spade terminals to OD switch) unless the terminals are cut off the wires and then reinstalled once the wires are passed up through the knob and collar.

Surely someone has done this, am I missing something or do the spade terminals have to be cut off and reinstalled? Thanks -

Zack
