Just how important is that spring in the driveshaft donut? 200 1990

I am swapping out the AW70 in my son's 90 244. In removing the driveshaft I found the spring in the rubber donut to be broken.

Just how important is that spring and is something that is relatively close to the same size and tension "good enough"?

This has been a rough R&R compared to the last two or three I have done and I need to get this car back on the road as soon as possible.

Thanks for any input.

Randy
