Tachometer on 1981 245 won't work 200 1981

I bought a large tach/small clock combo off ebay. Installation was easy. I found the red/white striped wire and plugged it into rear of tach no problem but the tach doesn't work. The clock works ok and all the other lights, and odometer work too. The other end of the red/white wire is attached to the coil. I'm not sure how to troubleshoot from here. Am I missing anything? Any ideas for troubleshooting?
It's a 1981 wagon with standard transmission and electric overdrive.

I did a search of posts and archive but haven't come across this before
