Help! Alternator problems mid-way through road trip! 900 1995

Help! Looking for info from the hotel room on an unexpected stop in Kingston on our way to Toronto. The car: 1995 940 turbo sedan. The problem: Driving along, 230km into our trip, and the SRS light comes on, then the ABS light. Pull over at the next exit, and the car is idling poorly, radio not working well. I park and check the voltage at the battery-12v. Now car will not start. Get a boost from a friendly gas-station client, and running I measure 9.6v at the battery. I suspect the alternator, but there was no battery light as we were driving. After the tow (my daughters got a kick out of that) I find someone who is willing to part out their '90 740 n/a and bring me the alternator (no alternators to be found around here). First question: I believe the '90 is an 80 amp, and mine is a 100 amp-are they interchangeable (to get me home at least?) Second question: Is it the alternator? No charge light while running (very very faint when I turn the key on), and battery seems strong (it cranked and started after sitting for a couple of hours). Any help for this stranded traveler and his family?
