Odometer / Trip meter question 200 1985

Would I be well advised to pull the instrument cluster, and clean and then lubricate the gear set periodicaly, or is it something that is better left alone until it fails? Mine has never been touched, but after almost 24 years, I am starting to wonder. The trip meter resets smoothly, and I depend on it for keeping track of teh fuel economy.
