A quick pull to the right and then? 700

I just bought an 85 740 to putter around town and when driving home from the grocery store last night (going about 35 mph) the car gave a quick tug to the right and then began clanking a bit. It was pulling to the right for about a block and then straightened out. I crept home and it's now sitting parked until I can figure out what it is.

Could there be some link to the fact that I had both front tires pulled off yesterday to get nails pulled out and plugged? The previous owner says he replaced the brake pads two months ago. Is it possible he had no idea what he was going and caused more harm than good?

I really like this car and don't want to halfway repair it and make more trouble for myself down the road. Any direction or guidance would be GREATLY appreciated.
