Overfilled Fluid in ZF Transmission - uh oh! 700 1985

Hello everyone,

After draining the transmission fluid and changing the filter on my ’85 740 with a ZF automatic transmission, I began adding new fluid. The owner’s manual states it has a capacity of 7.9qts. and knowing that all fluid isn’t drained during a change, I figured I’d start by adding about 6 to 7 quarts and then check the level. At about 6.5 quarts fluid began running out of the top side of the transmission. The front end of the car is still on jack stands so the vehicle isn’t level.

A couple of things I’m worried about. Is it normal for excess fluid to be able to run out of the top of the transmission instead of the fill tube? If so, how is this possible while preventing contamination from entering? Hope I didn’t damage anything.

Thanks for any words of wisdom.
