M41/M46 Transmission 140-160

I've got a '73 142 with an M40 4-speed. Can you mate an M46 with the B20 engine? What's the difference between an M41 and M46 other than one is used for the 140 series B20 engine and the other for the 240 B21 engine. Other than the bell housing they look pretty much the same. Thanks
